This fortress island is part of the “Stelling van Amsterdam” (Defence Line of Amsterdam) and is a UNESCO world heritage site. This defence line was built around 1885 to defend the capital. Our fortress is the biggest of the entire Defensive Line. It’s huge!
The domed hall with murals, the large bunkers and the mysterious labyrinth of passageways of the Fortdiscovery. Feel the thrill of the past on every bit of this 4-hectare large island. And put this adrenaline to good use for the activities.
Although the Fort Island is a historic location, it is fully equipped with modern conveniences. Needless to say, even the location has been strategically chosen: Forteiland IJmuiden is only a short half-hour drive from Amsterdam. Followed by a 5 minute journey to the island on our boat, "The Queen Emma". While you are on the Fort Island, our smaller boat (the Fortwachter) is also on standby for people who are late, the organisation team and in the event of an emergengy. It is not possible to spend the night on the island itself, but you could stay at the Leonardo hotel. From the island we offer a direct service to the Seaport Marina where the hotel is situated.
There’s plenty to discover in the fortress. But what you’re going to explore, is up to you. Will you go on a culinary tour or would you rather try your luck at archery? Whatever activities you choose, you will do them together with your colleagues. Who will prove themselves a historian? And which colleague is braver than you think? Discover this during the Fortdiscovery.

The soldiers used to sleep on the fort. Now we sleep 10 minutes by boat in the Leonardo Hotel IJmuiden. This 4-star hotel is the perfect place after a day on Fort Island. Want to stay even closer to the fort? We can also dock sleeping vessels for a true maritime experience.
Before you schedule Fort Discovery in your colleagues' calenders, you might want to look around the island first. This is possible without obligation, of course. You’ll experience what it is like to take the boat to the Fort Island and to walk through a piece of history. Questions about catering and accommodation? We would love to answer them for you. Let the discovery begin!
